Looking for a Headspace alternative?
Headspace is one of the best-known meditation apps, and for many people it's the right choice. ZenGPT works differently. This page sets out the differences plainly, including where Headspace is the better fit.
The short version
Headspace is a large library with structure around it: courses and programs, sleep and focus content, and Ebb, an AI companion you can talk to that recommends things from that library. You choose what to play, with help.
ZenGPT is narrower. There's no library to browse. You check in, in your own words, and ZenGPT personalizes one guided meditation for that moment.
Both are built to help you feel calmer, sleep better and focus. The difference is how you get to a session, and how much of it is about you.

Where Headspace is likely the better choice
- You want a deep library to explore on your own, with many sessions, series and formats.
- You want a structured path, like a course that teaches meditation step by step over several days.
- You want content beyond guided meditation, like sleep audio or music for focus.
- You want to play several different sessions a day. ZenGPT makes one new meditation per day.
- You use Android, or want to listen on the web. ZenGPT is iPhone only.
- Your employer already gives you Headspace.
Where ZenGPT is different
- No browsing. You don't pick from categories or scroll a catalog. The check-in is the whole interface.
- The meditation itself is personalized. Ebb recommends sessions from Headspace's library. ZenGPT personalizes your meditation for the moment you're in, from greeting you by name to acknowledging what you said.
- One thing at a time. One session a day, made for the moment you check in, with no queue of content waiting for you.
- Your feedback carries forward. Say how a session landed and the next one takes it into account.
Choosing between them
If you like having choices and want to learn meditation systematically, Headspace is very good at that. If the choosing is the problem, if you open an app, scroll and close it again, ZenGPT replaces the scroll with a question you can answer: how are you, right now?
ZenGPT is free to download, and the subscription price is on the purchase screen before you commit to anything. To see how ZenGPT works in more detail, read about the AI meditation app and how personalized guided meditation works in it.
If you're switching
- Can I use both? Yes. A library app for courses or sleep audio, and ZenGPT for the days you don't know what you need, aren't competing for the same minutes.
- Will my Headspace history carry over? No. ZenGPT starts from your first check-in and builds from the feedback you give after each session.
- Do I need experience? No. Every ZenGPT session is guided from start to finish. If you've done a beginner course elsewhere, you'll recognize the basics: settling in, following the breath, and coming back when your mind wanders.
