Looking for a Calm alternative?
Calm is a household name, best known for its sleep content and a large, polished library. ZenGPT takes a different approach. Here's an honest comparison, including the cases where Calm is the better fit.
The short version
Calm is a library you explore: guided meditations, Sleep Stories, music, soundscapes and much more, with recommendations to help you choose.
ZenGPT is built around a conversation. You say how you're doing, and ZenGPT personalizes one guided meditation for that moment.
Both apps want to help you unwind and sleep better. Where they differ is in how you find a session, and in how much of that session is about you.

Where Calm is likely the better choice
- Sleep is your main reason for using an app, and you love being read to. Long narrated Sleep Stories are Calm's signature, and they aren't what ZenGPT does.
- You want music, nature sounds and other audio alongside meditation.
- You want plenty of choice every day. ZenGPT makes one new meditation per day.
- You're on Android. ZenGPT is iPhone only.
- You get Calm through work or your health plan.
Where ZenGPT is different
- You start by talking, not browsing. There are no categories to sort through. Say what's going on in your own words, or tap a suggested reply.
- The meditation is about you. It's personalized for the moment you check in: it greets you by name, fits the time of day, and acknowledges what you said.
- Each day is a fresh start. One meditation, made for the moment you check in, that you can replay as often as you like.
- It learns from how sessions land. Tell ZenGPT how a session felt, and the next one takes that into account.
Choosing between them
If you want a big, beautiful library and you enjoy choosing, Calm is hard to beat. If you'd rather not choose at all, ZenGPT asks how you are and makes the choice with you, then personalizes the session for that moment.
ZenGPT is free to download, and the subscription price is on the purchase screen before you commit to anything. If sleep is why you're looking, read about meditation for sleep with ZenGPT. If you're weighing other apps too, there's a comparison with Headspace.
If you're switching
- Can I use both? Yes. Calm for stories and music, and ZenGPT for a session made for how you feel today, aren't competing for the same minutes.
- Will my Calm history carry over? No. ZenGPT starts from your first check-in and builds from the feedback you give after each session.
- Can ZenGPT help at bedtime? It won't read you a story. A bedtime check-in gets a meditation made for the night, guided at an unhurried pace, with audio that keeps playing with your screen locked.
- Do I need experience? No. Every session is guided from start to finish, so there's nothing to learn first.
